Safe Gun Storage
Safe Firearm Storage Information
Valley View ISD is committed to the safety and well-being of all students. In accordance with Texas law, school districts are required to provide parents and guardians with information regarding the safe storage of firearms.
Proper firearm storage plays a critical role in preventing accidents, injuries, and unauthorized access. We encourage all families to take steps to ensure firearms are stored safely and securely in the home.
Texas law states that it is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a location where a child could gain access. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person may be held responsible if a child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm due to failure to properly secure it.
Penalties for making a firearm accessible to a child can range from a Class C misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor, which may include fines and/or jail time.
Safe storage practices include:
- Storing firearms unloaded in a locked safe or container
- Keeping ammunition stored separately
- Using trigger locks or other safety devices
Texas also exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from sales tax, making it more accessible for families to secure their firearms.
