Update on School Safety

In recent months state and local agencies have been working hard to evaluate and strengthen safety measures on public school campuses.  Schools have been directed to inspect and repair as necessary all exterior doors and to update their Multi-Hazard Operations Plans, adding a threat “annex” and an active shooter appendix.  The MEOP plan was reviewed by the district’s safety committee on Thursday, August 11, and will be submitted to the state.  The district held safety meetings with all staff members prior to the start of school to review emergency procedures and to answer any questions.

Other measures being undertaken by the district are:

  • Adding a second School Resource Officer (SRO). There will be one officer assigned to the secondary campus and one will be at the elementary campus.
  • Limiting access to the campus during the school day.  Perimeter gates will remain locked during the school day. All visitors to the campus will be required to check in at one of the main school entrances to gain admission to the campus for all events, including pep rallies, etc.
  • Students will not be allowed visitors during lunch except during specifically designated days.
  • The district employed a commercial door security company to inspect all exterior doors and implement any needed repairs.  Those are underway at the present time.
  •  The district will also be upgrading classroom door locks in the areas known as the Middle School North Wing and the High School West Wing.

The Board of Trustees, Administration, and Staff of Valley View ISD appreciates your cooperation in doing all that is possible to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for our students.
