Second to the Director, the Drum Majors have the most critical and essential role in the band. The Drum Majors are the highest-ranking student leaders.  They conduct the band at all events and often lead the band in drills and warmups.

Second to the Director, the Drum Majors are the primary contact for the band and should be respected as such in a Director’s absence. Drum Majors conduct the ensemble and aid in the strength and musicality of the band.

 

Drum Major Responsibilities

Attends every rehearsal, performance, and show

Shows up to rehearsals early to help set up

Ensures that Captains and Section Leaders are executing their responsibilities

Sets an example of hard work and attention to detail

Communicates information from band to Directors

Captains and Section leaders are chosen to lead and teach the members of their group. They help the Drum Major and Director relay messages and work on difficult or troubling parts of the show during rehearsals. Generally, the section leaders are chosen from upperclassmen since they have more years of experience.

 

Band Captain / Section Leader Responsibilities

Attends every rehearsal, performance, and show

Shows up to rehearsals early to help set up

Schedules section rehearsals to improve areas that need work

Keeps order in their section

Makes sure that their section is prepared with music and instruments

Makes sure that their section is properly dressed for performances

Sets an example of staying on task and working hard

Communicates information from section to Drum Majors and Directors


The Valley View Band members need your help! Help our students raise funds that will supplement our competitions, travel, uniforms, props, clinicians, instrument rentals, repairs, and help provide the best experience possible for our students. We need student and parent volunteers to help sell fireworks. To pick a time slot, click the fireworks photo below.
